点评:We visited Edensor Tea Cottage today, a charming spot nestled in Derbyshire, and were initially impressed. The setting is idyllic, and our first course was truly enjoyable fresh, well-prepared, and served with warmth by the friendly staff.
However, the experience soured quite drastically when we decided to indulge in an extra treat: tea and cakes. All four of us were taken aback by the overwhelming sugar content of the cakes so saccharine that no other flavours could be discerned. We’re not sugar-shy by any means, but this was off the scale.
When we politely raised our concerns with the assistant manager (who also served us), we were met with an astonishingly dismissive attitude. We were told, rather curtly, that “no one has ever complained about the cakes before,” and no refund would be offered despite the fact that we had barely touched them.
Let me be clear: this wasn’t about the money (£30 is not a sum we’re losing sleep over), but about the principle. Good hospitality isn’t just about serving food it’s about listening to your patrons and showing some grace when things fall short. Instead, we were met with a tone that essentially told us to shut up and move along. For one of our group a solicitor this flippant brush-off felt especially insulting.
What could have been a beautiful, memorable afternoon ended on a disappointing note. A real shame.
We won’t be returning — not because of the overly sweet cakes, but because when something went wrong, the team failed the basic test of hospitality: care and accountability.
