点评:I came primarily for the wildlife and rainforest walks and the biggest surprise was the variation of experiences that filled the week. Sea kayaking to a deserted idyllic beach, bird spotting from a pirogue on a calm river, and snorkelling from directly below my room were all huge fun.
The other big surprise was the quality of the cuisine, the best I experienced in three visits to Madagascar. Lots of fresh seafood and fruits (and juices) and local veggies, prepared in interesting and tasty ways.
I did two trips to the primary forest with Ursula, and several other walks, and found new things on each one. It can be hard to spot the lemurs high in the canopy, and I did not get good photos, but spotted six species. Ursula found lots of interesting reptiles, especially on the night walks, and also was very knowledgeable on trees.
The village visit is to be recommended; I am wary of such things, but it was very well managed and there is obviously a good rapport between with the villagers, many of whom supply and work at the lodge. The lodge staff were absolutely lovely, especially Rosie, who was keen to practise her English. From the boat men to the breakfast chef, all were helpful and quick with their smiles. I was given a tour behind the scenes, and it was impressive to see the modern solar energy system alongside traditional fresh produce storage cages. Evidently, local craft skills are maintained in the wood sheds.
It rained every day, but mostly at night, and it did not disrupt activities - December seems a good time to visit. A small umbrella is handy thing to pack, and can be used in the forest. We were lucky with sea conditions, and a very quick transfer each way from Maroantsetra, just over an hour.
Given the logistics and range of activities, a week is really needed here. It is really unique for Madagascar, a top class lodge surrounded by national park. I can't think of anything to criticise. Madagascar as a whole is a fascinating wildlife destination but needs time or money or both, and it can be tricky to cover more than one part in a visit. Masoala Forest Lodge is an ideal destination for active travellers, and a good way to get to experience of lot of Madagascar's wildlife in a short time at one location.
