HORRIBLE location, terrible value for your money

点评：Hotel Casa Santelmo
My husband and I stayed in this hotel for one night only, and frankly, it was one night too many. We've been traveling through Colombia, trying to see as much of this beautiful country as possible, and the state of Boyaca is strangely not one too many tourists talk about. So, we did some research, and based on the description of this place and the highly flattering accompanying photos, we decided to book a couple of nights. Judging by the mention of a "great location", we thought we were in for a treat. Boy, were we wrong! For starters, getting there once you hit the city limits is a challenge in itself. You have to cross the entire town and drive through ugly slums and sketchy neighborhoods to get there. I'm not exagerating when I say it's a very unpleasant experience to have to cross some of the poorest, filthiest, most run-down neighborhoods and slums, and kind of still be in them once you get to the hotel. The "great location" is a LIE. It' not a great location, it's actually a horrible location. There's no place to go for a walk when all that surrounds the place is dirt roads and poor, unkept farms right next to it. If what they mean by "great location" is a view of the lake if you just focus on it alone while ignoring all the slums in front of you, then I guess, but we were appalled and felt upset over the very deceptive description of this place. We had not been in the place more that 2 minutes when the hostess asked us to pay her in full for both nights out front. With all the traveling we do, never before has such a shocking request been asked of us. By now, we already had something quite clear. There would not be a second night for sure. So we paid for the night and went to our room. Had we not been as tired as we were after driving all day, we would have left right then and there, but it was already too late to start looking for something else, so we bit the bullet and stayed. One of the features the hostess boasted about when she showed us the room was the "wonderful" state-of-the-art shower. She made great efforts to impress us with it, only for us to find out the next morning that it was broken.
A test I do in every hotel room we stay in, is to see the cleanliness, and this was no exception. I rolled sufficient toilette paper around my hand, I moistened it and wiped the bathroom floor in a couple of spots, only to discover in horror the filth and all kinds of hair the paper had collected. We were so disgusted to say the least. We had to wear sandals at all time so as not to touch the floor, even inside the shower. When I mentioned this to the hostess the next morning, she was unapologetic or even the least perturbed by it. Incredible!
Breakfast was nothing special, actually very so so. A slice of unappealing bread, unimpressive eggs, oj and coffee. We couldn't get out of there fast enough. What a bad experience!
We're still scratching our heads in confusion that this place had a 9.1 rating. How it got there is an absolute mystery to us, because they definitely don't deserve it. A 2 would be more fitting. We do NOT recommend this place.
