点评:I have frequented Xander's at Tipu Sultan mainly because it's closer to where I live and the service is always very welcoming! The food, however, despite the hype does leave much to be desired. I'm not saying it's horrible. I'm simply saying if it's not that bad, it's not that great either. And yes, it's noisy, but I suppose it's like that everywhere in the city, regardless of where you dine.
Now for starters, pun intended, we ordered the Almond Crusted Chicken Strips. Although they were piping hot, the strips were too crusted, for the lack of a better word. They scratched my gums and anything with a hint of spice that I had over the following day or so, left a burning mark. The fries too were weirdly clamped together. I'm assuming they use frozen fries because they didn't look hand-cut, either way it seems the fryer was too crowded hence the sticking together.
Next up, the mains! My mother ordered from the specials menu; the salmon with avocado which she thoroughly enjoyed. Unfortunately, the mini pepperoni pizza that I got was, well, let's just say some school canteens would be doing a better job. Bland and dry are the only two words I can think of. Even the dough lacked flavour, and that's not even where all the flavour is meant to be. I almost never leave my food, but this time, just two morsels in and I was done.
As for dessert, we sent for the carrot cake. Whilst I was glad they used red carrots along with crisp walnuts, layered with just the right amount of cream cheese frosting, I do not understand the drizzle of saccharinely sweet syrups. So off putting! Actually, this is sadly the general state of desserts these days. There seems to be no sense of balance of flavour. Being a trained pastry chef, I can't help but look at all the elements and how they all tie in together and it's a shame they rarely do.
I have had a few other experiences here worthy of mention, but we'll keep that for another review. Will I dine here again? Perhaps, as it is convenient. Let's just hope I get the chance to write something better next time.
