点评:I dined recently at Alara. I very much liked the cuisine and our meal was good, not great but I wouldn't complain. But, when the bill came, there was a 20% service charge which I assumed went to the wait staff. My friend had read the menu and noticed a statement that explained the service charge was for "operational expenses" and not wait staff. Tip was "optional". Now to me, a 20% service charge for operational expenses that does not include the wait and kitchen staff is truly excessive. I, for one, will not be dining at Alara in the future unless they reduce the service charge or agree to distribute at least part of that charge to the deserving wait and kitchen staff. I can only assume that many patrons don't look at their bill carefully, or, if they do, they think that it is the tip as it is on most bills at restaurants throughout Europe and then these customers don't leave a tip for the deserving staff. I dine out frequently and live in the same zip code. I will certainly inform my friends and neighbors of the restaurant's policy regarding operational expenses and tipping. In conclusion, while I "liked" my dinner and found the service we received adequate, there are a plethora of restaurants in the area from which to chose and Alara is not one you should consider.
