点评:The Old Korean Legation Museum in Logan Circle, Washington, D.C., was opened in 2018. However, the building was used as the Korean Legation from 1889-1905. The building was taken and sold by Japan when they took over Korea’s government in 1905, but the Korean government repurchased the building in 2012 to turn it into a museum. It stands as a significant symbol of Korea’s international growth and relevance before, during, and after Japanese occupation. The museum is open on Tuesday-Saturday from 11am to 4pm, and online reservations are required.
The museum is a faithful recreation of the original layout of the Korean Legation based on pictures and written records depicting it in its former glory. Every room is carefully made in the likeness of the original, from the Gaekdang where the minister would welcome guests to the Jeongdang where special ceremonies were conducted on important days to honor the King and Crown Prince of Korea. Even the carpets and wallpapers were carefully picked for accuracy of representation. There are several items throughout the building that would be used in the Victorian Era when the Legation was functioning, like typewriters and ink sets for both English and Korean writing. There are also pictures of some of the residents, including the Minister (Park Chung Yang), his family, and his staff. The top floor was a modern section with several maps, pictures, and artefacts with descriptions that detailed the history of the founding, functioning, loss, and reclamation of the historic building.
I went to the museum as part of a field trip with my Korean class, and it far exceeded my expectations. As someone interested in history and diplomacy, this museum was right up my alley. Walking through the first and second floors was like being transported back in time, and the tour guides gave insights into every detail of each room as it was originally used. The attention to detail in the recreation of the old images depicting the Legation was incredible, and it allowed me to fully appreciate the history. Anyone who enjoys history and international relations will have a great time. The third floor had a sleek design and a plethora of information that gave context to the floors below, so I would recommend starting on the third floor if possible. This has been one of my favorite museum experiences, so I definitely recommend checking it out!
