点评:The British know how to make a great sandwich.
I could have ordered a million different things off the unique, exciting and culinarily adventurous menu of Duke's Counter, but this time I settled on the spicy aubergine. I was not disappointed. The ciabatta was satisfyingly chewy, toasted to the point of crispiness without being stale. It was spread with liberal dollops of pesto and green chili puree, which both complemented the relatively mild panco-crusted aubergine (eggplant) perfectly. I liked the tangy charred red onions, but found the pickled jalapeños to be a bit overwhelming. I would order the dish without them next time. But the melty smoked gouda on this sandwich was my favorite part. It pulled all the flavors together into one unforgettable taste. You would be hard-pressed to find a better sandwich in the whole of Washington, D.C.
Entrees aside, it's worth noting the chicken wings at Duke's make for a splendid appetizer. Prices here are pretty reasonable. The atmosphere is minimalistic and casual, sporting decorations with references to the London Underground and the National Zoo nearby. But the sandwiches here are worthy of English royalty. If you find yourself hungry after visiting the pandas across the street, Duke's Counter is an ideal place to go.
