New Zealand Unplugged: Awe-Inspiring

点评：Wow! I feel privileged to have been included in the inaugural year tour of ZigZag adventures in New Zealand. Really didn't know what to expect as there was little info /reviews on this outfit. However, one thing was clear and that was the details of itineraries and what to expect and what to bring were very thorough and organized. This helped me to pull the plug and give it a shot. I choose the 16 day tour as this seemed the most safe. Boy, I now wish I had at least chosen a 30 day tour. It was a most memorable and amazing experience.
Grant and Jemma( V/ operators) where amazing. So organized, accommodating, knowledgeable and fun. It is obvious they are passionate about delivering a superlative overland experience to participants. They have spent so much time laced with creativity and money to deliver a custom experience. The four-wheel drive Mercedes Sprinter van has been customized to accommodate 10 participant passengers with the comfort of your own seat, charging ports, storage for personal items and an on board fridge for snacks and other libations. The views from the van are awesome as you transverse the islands of NZ on you way to your next destination. The van pulls an amazing customized trailer which houses not only all your camping gear and personal luggage but also a fully stand alone kitchen with gas burners , grills, griddles as well as two refrigerator that are actually powered by solar panels on top the the trailer. It is all Brilliant!!
When you land at your destination Grant and Jemma are so helpful is getting you up and running in you new temporary home. At first setting up the Aussie made tents was intimidating, however after a few tries it was kinda fun. It was also fun getting help and helping other players get set up; a great opportunity for bonding and getting to know your camp mates from all over the world. The tents are huge and the sleeping stretcher ( cots) are super nice. It is great to have a roomy place to lie you sleepy head and to store you personal stuff every day. The rest of the day(s) are spent exploring or taking day trips with ZigZag or on your own. Grant and Jemma have chosen locations and car parks that are I feel off of the typical tourist path. Exploring and seeing natural wonders and smaller less crowed places is my jam and they certainly delivered. Sometimes we camped by the ocean, other times it was by a incredible lake or near a forest. Always different, always beautiful! At the end of the day we would all return to our 'home' and gather around the 'wonder trailer' where we would share stories of the day and eat a not short of gourmet meal prepared by Jemma(and Grant). Always different and always delicious and satisfying. Alway using locally sourced foods that where fresh and healthy. I'm still waiting for a ZigZag cook book of the many dishes that where prepared for us. : ) So much better than I ever imaging for camp cooking Yummmy!
Some nights where cooler than expected so I would recommend taking some merino wool layers( most likely produced in NZ) and long johns and a cap to keep you warm and comfy. Sunscreen is also a must as the summer sun can be intense. There are plenty of opps to wash and dry clothes so dont bring to much as I did.
If you are looking for a great way to experience the awesome glory New Zealand has to offer and want a unique and personal experience in the overland setting I would highly recommend ZigZag. You will most likely leave with a full heart of memories and a new set of friends. Get out there and ZigZag! You will not regret this.
