点评:I really wonder what the Sheraton, Sydney thinks it is doing in housing such a dreadful restaurant as Sydney Common.
In several decades in Sydney, this was arguably the worst restaurant experience that I have had to endure.
Eight of us went to dinner. Sydney Common is on the mezzanine level of the Sheraton opposite Hyde Park in Sydney. Its looks like a cafeteria but that would not matter if other things were good.
We had to wait 40 minutes to get a drink. The staff were incredibly good at avoiding eye contact and we had to resort to waving and calling to get someone even to come over to the table. The staff were all clearly wishing they had not been working that night.
The head “waiter” that night, Ernesto (he told us he is from Chile), was fed up that some of us took a few moments to decide what first drink we wanted. He huffed off and we had to start the waving again.
As there were 8 of us, we had to have the so-called “set menu” – that was a Big Mistake!
I have to say that it really made airline food look like a Michelin Star restaurant. The initial “shared plates” were ghastly fare and I wondered how long they had been sitting in the kitchen waiting to be brought out for their victims.
Getting a second drink was another ordeal of waving and trying to get some serious traction. The staff had disappeared for more important chats in the kitchen.
“Ernesto” was surprisingly and repeatedly defiant when we said that it was difficult to get attention and service.
The time gap between the “courses” varied considerably and the final “meal” was enormous slabs of dark meat. The vegetables arrived well before the meat and looked overcooked and prepared a long time before being served. It seemed to me that there had been very little care taken in preparing the meal before its final journey to our table. At least the restaurant was consistent in all aspects of its performance that night.
We waited an Epoch for the dessert and one of our party, in desperation, went up to talk to “Ernesto”. Some of us were anxious to leave and get the bill.
By this time, the restaurant area was full of guests staying at the Sheraton but not eating, instead using the dining area for sitting around looking at their phones.
The Sheraton should be ashamed at having such a restaurant as Sydney Common under its banner. The Sheraton is clearly not monitoring this restaurant.
However, rather than avoid Sydney Common, I intend to go again with several colleagues and video the dire experience to share on You Tube and X / Twitter and then the Sheraton will have to raise its standards and might even apologise for what it inflicted on us.
