2nd Century BC House with Intact Mosaic Floor
The House of the Lake的点评
点评：The House of the Lake was built around the second century BC. Two generations of the same family lived here before it was destroyed by fire in 69BC.
It’s one of several ancient houses on the island of Delos which have detailed and intact floor mosaics, every bit as good as at Pompeii.
It is the first of the grand, private residences that you see if you follow the Walking Trail with the blue arrows. It is located opposite The Sacred Lake.
The centrepiece is the floor mosaic, featuring a black, white and red rosette which is bordered by rows of wave-like patterns.
The other notable feature are is the central colonnaded courtyard. Like most houses of this time, the rooms were all built around this courtyard and faced in towards it. Many of the columns remain standing. One still retains its scroll and stands proudly above the ruins of the wall.
Whilst we couldn’t walk through the house (wooden gates block the entrances), you can get a very good, close-up view of the mosaics.
There are three different viewing points which give you slightly different angles.
There’s also a board with good detailed information and pictures of statuettes that were found inside the house.
It is worth noting that the mosaic here is not as elaborate as at other Delos houses. More complex and detailed examples can be found closer to the theatre, at the House of Dolphins, the House of Masks and the House of Dionysus.
