点评:This is one of the highlights on the ancient island of Delos and is one of the last sights you see if you follow the blue walking trail around to the left of the Sacred Harbour.
It’s impressive and was one of only a few ancient Greek theatres that was built completely in marble.
Construction began in 296 BC and took around 50+ years to complete. When it was finished, it could hold an estimated 6,500 people.
Interestingly, the population on Delos was pretty tiny so the theatre was filled only during the festive seasons.
The ‘koilon’ (the semi-circular area where the audience sat) was built upon a short, sturdy marble retaining wall. It was on a huge scale, with 43 rows of seating.
You can clearly see the first four rows of seats which are largely intact. The seats in the first row are the best preserved. This was where the VIPs sat so not surprisingly, they are the only seats with back rests. Although the higher rows are not intact, we could still make out the general idea of the rest of the seating that would have filled the sloping hillside.
Located within the swanky, more sophisticated residential quarter of Delos, this became known as the “theatre district”. The nearby homes (House of Cleopatra, House of Masks, House of Dolphins and the House of the Trident) belonged to the well-to-do - bankers from Rome and Egyptian and Phoenician merchants. The area also included clearly defined streets, a cistern, sanctuaries, workshops, and shops.
If like us, you are doing a self-guided walking tour, there is a detailed information board next to the theatre with a diagram, background information, aerial photos and pictures of theatre masks and mosaics found here.
DELOS NOTES:
You need at least a couple of hours to explore the island but be aware that there is no shade and few facilities. You’ll need to bring your own water and snacks if you want them. The only toilets are by the entrance. Currently the museum is closed until 2024.
If you’re not doing a tour, then bring a good guide-book or download a self-guided tour beforehand. When we were there, the only maps were in Greek.
