点评:This is one of several ancient houses on Delos island, clustered around the area known as ‘the theatre district’. It's one of the last sights you see if you follow the blue walking trail around to the left of the Sacred Harbour.
The outside looks much like all the other structures in the area so it would have been very easy for us to walk past and skip it. By the time we arrived here, we were we were pretty tired. The heat was beating us and and we were overwhelmed by the sheer size of the archaeological site.
Fortunately, we hadn’t completely given up yet so we wandered through the passage-like entry and were completely surprised to see the amazingly detailed mosaic floors intact and in situ.
It would have been disappointing had we missed these. They are as good as any we saw at Pompeii.
In one room, is a dramatic mosaic of Dionysus wielding a spear and riding a black, spotted leopard.
In another, a large mosaic shows two figures, one playing a long, slim golden flute and the other dancing and swaying rhythmically to the music.
In a nearby room, a cubic pattern of red, white and black tiles covers the floor, wall-to-wall and yet another room has a series of theatrical masks.
The rooms are connected to a central colonnaded courtyard. Although you can’t walk into any of them, you can walk around the courtyard and peer into each one through the protective metal grates. Our view was a little restricted by the grates which also made it difficult to take a good photograph. Sadly, when we were there, the mosaics were covered in a heavy layer of dusty dirt which partially obscured them and dulled the colours.
Nevertheless, it was quite incredible to see such detailed and varied mosaics that have survived for well over 2000 years.
Built around 150-100 BC, it is thought that the house was probably used as accommodation for traveling theatrical groups performing at Delos
DELOS NOTES:
You need at least a couple of hours to fully explore the island. You need to go prepared. There is no shade and few facilities so bring your own water as well as hats, sunscreen and snacks. Decent, covered walking shoes will make trekking across the island a lot more comfortable. Currently the museum is closed until 2024 and until it re-opens, the only toilets are by the entrance.
If you’re not booking a tour (we didn't), then bring a good guide-book or download a self-guided tour beforehand. When we were there, the only maps were in Greek.
