点评:We are always looking for a restaurant that serves up decent pizza, or at least as close as possible to N.Y. pizza. Southeastern U.S. is stuck on chain brands like Papa John’s, Domino’s, Lil Caesar’s, etc. Infrequently will you find a local owner-run individual shop that makes a decent pie from fresh dough. By accident, I walked into Santino’s located in a small strip mall on Old Alabama Road. They had a small line up of customers waiting to pick up their take-out orders. After perusing the menu, I said to myself, “Why not?” “Let me try their pie; it can’t be any worse than the corporate giant’s in town.”
I feel that the only way to truly test the quality of a pizza is to order one as plain as possible to taste the true essence of a pie. With that in mind, I ordered a White pizza which everyone else calls a Margherita. It was made with Ricotta, Mozzarella, fresh garlic and oil. It came out of the oven with a relatively thin crust that was crispy but still able to be folded to be eaten like a true New Yorker would. One does NOT eat pizza with a knife and fork. I was very pleasantly surprised by the quality of the pie at this little local eatery. I told my wife about my discovery and decided to try Santino’s for dinner several nights later.
My wife ordered up a large house salad topped with a chopped grilled chicken breast and wide choice of dressings on the side. This time, I tried my pizza with toppings. It comes in a personal 12” size or you can order 16” or 18” pies for a larger group. I ordered the Pesto Pizza which comes topped with pesto sauce, grilled chicken, grilled peppers, and light mozzarella cheese. I asked that they add fresh basil on top and they obliged. It was very tasty. We have not tried their traditional ‘bill of fare’ yet but will return soon to ‘test the water.’ Santino’s is not quite New York quality but it is head and shoulders above other Italian eateries in the area. If you want a hint of New York in your pizzas, calzones, and other Italian specialties, try Santino’s; “you’ll like it.”
