点评：We'd heard so many good reports about Nykterida - a Chania institution that has attracted lots of A-listers over the years. With a beautiful view over Souda Bay, it has such a rich history that we were a bit concerned it wouldn't live up to the hype. We needn't have worried. True, it's expensive by Chania standards but is well worth the money for special occasions. We would have given it a five-star rating but the atmosphere was a bit flat on the night we were there. Only a handful of tables were occupied - but it was the first weekend of Lent. Presumably this was the lull after the previous weekend, when most locals had been out celebrating carnival. We chose a delicious fennel salad and two other beautifully prepared starters - mushrooms and a selection of village sausages - to share among four of us. The presentation of the sausages was a magnificent cabaret in itself - served in a large glass dome described on the menu as a "smokehouse". We'd already been served a huge basket of bread, rusks and breadsticks alongside a large bowl of olive oil for dipping, plus mugs of hot stamnagathi (wild chicory) broth. We opted for casual, fairly plain choices for main courses. Three went for burgers - again beautifully presented and hailed by one of our party as the best burger they'd ever tasted - and I chose a delicious risotto. As is customary in western Crete, desserts were complimentary - in this case a selection of fine pastries. With a bottle of moderately-priced wine, the bill came to 127 euros. We will definitely return in summer when dinner is served on a large terrace.
