Nice bikes, but no historical information

点评：Our family of ten took this tour in August 2023. If you are looking to get out on a bike for a few minutes of exercise, then I think you will enjoy this tour. If you are hoping to learn something about Chania or anything about the area, then you may be disappointed.
Our travel agent sold us this tour as a “bike tour with guide” to learn about historic Chania. Unfortunately, the guide doesn’t actually talk to you about any of the areas you stop to visit. You are given earphones connected to a device with a pre-recorded message about all of the stops on the tour.
Unfortunately, out of our group of ten only two of the devices worked. The first 15 minutes of the tour was the guide trying to get the other devices to work, and he couldn't, so we just proceeded on the route. Our thought was that since the pre-recorded information didn’t work, that our guide would tell us about the places we stopped. That didn’t happen. We would just ride up to a historic site, he would press “play” and then wait for 5 minutes. We would pass around the two devices that worked so different people could hear at different times of the tour, but that meant at every single stop 8 members of our family where just staring at a building with no context or information, and the guide made no effort to include everyone who couldn't hear about the buildings.
At one point we asked the “guide” a question about a site, and his response was “I don’t know, it happened before I was born”. Since most of this history was over 1,000 years old, I would think everything happened before he was born!
The guide also had a microphone to use to speak to our group, but the only person who could hear him was the bike right behind him. The signal strength wouldn’t let anyone in position 2 through 10 hear what he was saying, but the person who could hear him said that the only information he said over the microphone was “we are coming up to a stop sign” or something like that.
What upset me the most about this tour is that we were asked ahead of time if we would allow them to take photos or our group to use in their marketing, which I agreed to. They said that they would be sending a copy of the photos to us, which never happened. So every 2-3 minutes we were stopping at a location and just staring at a building – with no information from either the guide or the pre-recorded info – and then every few minutes after that the guide would pull over and ask us to line up our bikes so he could take a photo of us.
In then end, I think we would have preferred to just rent bikes somewhere and go out on our own, because the extra expense of the “guide” wasn’t worth it at all, and stopping every few minutes for a photo shoot got very annoying.
To end on a positive note, the bikes themselves were in good shape and comfortable to ride, I just wish we had learned something that day.
