点评:This amazing playground, with 200 years worth of historical connections, is a real gem between the caravan park and harbour of Whitehills, about 5 miles from Banff.
I was first drawn to this playground more than 20 years ago when my family were staying at the caravan park. Even then, it contained a huge variety of clever play equipment for youngsters. It's right next to the shore and the latest pieces of equipment include many links to Whitehills's history as a fishing village. Most startling is a four-way crow's nest I - sadly - had no excuse for climbing as there were no youngsters around but, oh, how I wished I was six again.
This area is steeped in history and the good folk of the village have kindly provided an information board which explains the heritage and the name. It also explains why Whitehills appears to have a second, smaller, harbour very near the main one.
Where the lovely little caravan park is now was once the Blackpots Brick and Tile works (between 1766 and 1974). At various times, they made roof tiles, bricks and field drains from the red clay round about and the wee harbour was used to export the goods while bringing in coal to feed the manufacturing process. It certainly explains all the rusty-coloured, sea-worn rocks and pebbles among the more regular ones right at the edge of the sea.
There was, at one time, even a small narrow-guage railway here! That's 200 years' worth of history that would be lost to most of us visitors without the board, and it certainly stirred the imagination and had us looking out for the older tiles throughout the village.
Fishing and the sea are still among big attractions, but the stories of the hidden gems are so fascinating and add to the joy of a place. It's also something to do while the kids are shinning up the crow's nest.
