点评:Home of Boavista, Porto’s second team, there’s some equal parts magical and melancholy about the Bessa. Built around the turn of the century, but not, as it’s often mistaken, for use in Euro 2004, it saw the Black Panthers run themselves into a hell of a debt, something made all the worse by the aforementioned tournament seeing not only Portugal’s big 3, but also those immediately below like Braga & Vitoria recurve copious state funding for their state of the art new facilities while Boavista’s had come out if their own pocket.
Holding just over 28,000 all seated spectators, the Estadio do Bessa May be overshadowed by the homes of Portugal’s big 3, but it’s still an impressive place to call home. Unfortunately they don’t even normally attract half of that outwith the big games, so a lot of it is wasted, though on the bright side it means you’ll always get a ticket.
It’s easily accessible by Porto’s excellent Metro system, though it’s also a pleasant 30-40 min walk from the city centre, it’s easy enough to get to the ground without much hassle. Unfortunately there isn’t a lot around it, I only found one bar, that was a bit fancy dan for a football crowd and scandalously only sold Spanish beer. There is a decent little club store that confusingly isn’t part of the stadium, but the row of shops next to it (I had a hell of a time trying to get this explained) it’s not as all-covering as Porto or Benfica’s merch lines but passable.
Inside the stadium is very…well very early 2000s. If you’ve ever been in a stadium built in that period you’ll know what I mean. It’s not quite as polished and plastic as a newer one, but conversely is very, very concrete-y. I realise all stadiums are made of this, but there’s something about grounds built in that era where they just couldn’t seem to work out what to do with it so theirs seas of it. Inside the pitch area it’s most visible in the sections at the corners (surely they could have painted them black?) but the concourses are concrete jungle.
Of course concourse aesthetics aren’t really what you go to a stadium for, though a vital part of any concourse is the catering. The stalls are small, clearly not being used to capacity, but the Bifana and coke I got were nice. As with all Portuguese grounds it’s non-alcoholic beer so don’t get too excited.
Likewise the bathrooms are basic but passable, probably most importantly a good size.
The actual pitch area, where you’ll spend most of your time hopefully, is thankfully the highlight. Very boxy and ‘British’ in feel, it’s well maintained and the black and white seat design is excellent. There’s a small ultras group behind one goal, and as is the standard away fans are in the opposite end. The main stand is large but pleasant, offering good views, and the atmosphere pretty good for the smaller than half venue turnout. I was €25 a ticket, which isn’t bad, but I know the ones behind goal would be cheaper, but I wasn’t given the option on by the guy at the desk.
Overall though, the Estadio do Bessa is a nice little ground. It’s not a must see or Mecca for futbol fans, but if you’re in Portugal’s second city and Boavista are playing I’d say it’s definitely worth a trip
