PR1.3 Verada da Encumeada Hiking Trail (tour guide Luis)

点评：My fiancé and I originally booked to do the PR.1 trail including Pico do Arieiro on Monday 6th June which unfortunately was cancelled due to a landslide on the route the previous Saturday.
However, we were promptly informed via text of the situation on the Saturday morning by Elisabeth from Pico Transfers, who then offered either one of the two other routes including the Verada da Ecumeada trail, the longest and most challenging of the three hikes (at 6 and a half hours long), or a full refund.
Without hesitation, we opted for the challenge of completing the Verada da Ecumeada trail which was one of the best decisions we ever made, as we were rewarded with the most spectacular, jaw-dropping and gasp-inducing scenery at the top of the beautiful Madeiran mountains.
We were picked up directly from our hotel the following Monday by our designated guide and driver Luis, who was the consummate professional. As well as giving us crystal-clear instructions on the route itself including the mileage, level of ascent and estimated time to complete the route, he created a warm and friendly atmosphere for us and the other passengers (7 of us in total) which in turn helped to break the conversational ice.
During the drive back, he even provided personal suggestions on the best places to eat/drink/visit during our remaining time in Madeira. His passion for his homeland clearly shone through and we will certainly take him up on his suggestions for our second visit to Madeira having decided that a return to this beautiful island is a must.
His confident words that we would have the experience of a lifetime were fully merited as we greeted with sublime views from the trail, made even better by the crystal-clear sunshine with not a cloud in sight which is often a rarity due to the altitude and diverse climate. The hike, while long, usually consists of many ascents and dips, neither of which are overly strenuous although this will depend on whether you are a seasoned hiker.
The climb to Pico Ruivo itself is an unforgettable experience, made even more so for us as this is where my girlfriend and I got engaged, with two other passengers in our tour photographing/filming every moment, and which provided a source of celebratory conversation for the drive back.
The beauty of this route, coupled with the sense of accomplishment of completing it, made the sore limbs (and slight sun burn) worth it. A must-do if you ever visit Madeira and our special thanks go to Luis for helping make our special day even more so.
