点评:The Colosseum is one of the premier heritage sites in Rome and in the whole of Europe. Built in the late 1st century, it is also known as the Flavian amphitheatre after the dynasty during whose reign it was completed. Its capacity was at least 50,000 people, which means that it could hold 2.5 times as many people as the O2 Arena in London. It was used primarily for gladiator combat and other spectacles such as animal hunts and mock sea battles, though it gradually declined after the fall of the Western Roman Empire.
Visitors to this attraction can enjoy great views of the arena, which you can only visit with a more expensive ticket, as well as of the nearby area. There's also an exhibition about the Colosseum's history on the second floor and the second floor balcony offers you some of the best views of the Colosseum itself. Unfortunately, some of the other more interesting parts of this site, such as the Gate of Death and the underground tunnels, can only be visited with the more expensive tickets.
Standard tickets to this site cost €18.00, though there are various discounts and there are also options to buy tickets with audio guides on various websites. The ticket also grants you access to the Roman Forum and the Palatine Hill and you can easily spend a whole day exploring these three heritage sites. I suggest you set aside at least an hour and a half for the Colosseum but if you decide to go for the more expensive ticket that grants you entry to the arena too, you might need more than two hours. If you're really interested in history, make sure you give yourself at least 2-3 hours to explore the Forum and the Palatine Hill. Unfortunately, I decided to visit the Colosseum in the morning and see the forum and the hill in the late afternoon, which meant that some parts of these sites were closed and I couldn't see everything. Therefore, it might be a good idea to visit the Colosseum last as it seems to close later than the Forum and the Palatine Hill.
