点评：Think you know what a great jacket potato tastes like ? Well get ready to be proven wrong; Heimweh is a tiny family owned cafe in Kreuzberg with minimalist Turkish Decor, serving jacket potatoes with a street food twist like you’ve never experienced before. They offer homemade pasta, deserts (Homemade tiramisu and berry cheesecake when I went), tea, and lavishly topped jacket potatoes ! Healthy and filling!
They offer a variety of accompaniments to the jackets, all at €8.50, but £2 extra if you’d like meat toppings (the only accept card), and they’re not stingy with their serving sizes! They started off by mashing the insides of the potato and mixing with fine cheese to give a wonderful semi creamy texture. You can choose to have the innards muddled with pesto, and then topped with your choice of olives, rocket, lettuce, sweetcorn, red kidney beans, saffron carrots, pickled courgette and beets, guacamole, hummus, chunky chilli sauce, mini mozzarella balls, feta, cous cous, jalapeños, chicken, sausage, and a couple more that I am forgetting! What was amazing about these toppings is that each one was made to an incredible standard.
Served in a hearty bowl, every spoonful of this monstrous salad was bursting with flavour, and every time you dig in, you pick up a new combination of your dish. The sweet, salty, crunchy and creamy compliment each other perfectly alongside the carb that is the potato in this middle eastern salad, texture wise and flavour wise. A turkish dream - nutritious and hearty!
The servers were wonderful and so sweet and kind, they had no issue with speaking English or German. I was checked up on during my meal and even given a complimentary tiny cup of turkish tea. It would be wonderful if this well loved food spot could accept card, but luckily I had some cash with me.
Although I was bursting by the end of my meal , I HAD to try their homemade tiramisu, and it was just as delicious as the main course. The cream topping was a little heavy and I had to leave some of it aside, but the flavour of the bottom layers was incredible and I just couldn’t put it down. The cafe itself is comfortable and has many little nooks you can comfortably rest in, before heading back into Berlin. As compared to other cafes in Berlin and as a stand alone cafe, I would have expected a bit more attention for detail decor wise. Even for a minimalist style, it has some aesthetics left to be desired and can feel a bit barren and bare when it is not filled with customers. It is however sufficiently cooling during the hot summer months. Would definitely recommend for a filling afternoon lunch!
