点评:Disappointing Experience at The Corn Mill not a melt in the mouth experience
We dined at The Corn Mill this evening and were sadly very disappointed with the overall experience. While the staff were pleasant enough, the service was extremely poor. We waited around 45 minutes just to place our order and the food didn’t arrive for another hour after that—with no apology or acknowledgment of the delay.
When the food finally arrived, only one of our meals met a reasonable standard. The steak and ale pie had an overcooked, pastry; the cauliflower and lentil pie’s puff pastry was soggy; and worst of all, the Appleby’s cheese and onion pie arrived with pastry that was almost burnt and incredibly dense—it was inedible. I took a photo, but as guests, we didn’t want to make a fuss and simply left most of it.
What made things worse was the complete lack of follow-up. No staff came to check if everything was okay with our meals, which is usually standard practice. When the plates were collected, I discreetly mentioned the quality of the cheese pie particularly the pastry and the message that came back was that they were trying to make the pastry gluten free but hadn’t yet mastered the pastry.
If that’s the case, it really should be made much clearer on the menu. While there was a small “(gf)” notation, unless you’re specifically looking for gluten-free options, it’s easy to miss. Pastry—gluten-free or not—should not feel like it could break your teeth.
To add to the frustration, we requested a jug of water that never arrived. Later, my husband went to the bar to order two coffees and a pint of Diet Coke. The coffees arrived, but the Diet Coke never did and since our host paid the bill, we have no idea if we were charged for it.
For a venue that operates on bookings and should be able to plan ahead, this was a disappointing and poorly executed experience. Sadly, you let yourselves down in a big way this evening.
