Coventry's historic gem - a must-visit to support further restoration work
National Trust - Coventry Charterhouse的点评
点评:This is a fascinating historic site to visit. The building is the former refectory and prior's cell, much altered during almost 500 years of varied occupancy since the Carthusian monastery was suppressed. It contains remnants of a stunning medieval wall painting - fragments of which have ended up scattered around the upper floor as the building was altered in the period after dissolution.
The gardens show evidence of other parts of the monastery. One garden wall is part of the former church, the perimeter wall has remained standing, and there is a wall with remnants of the entrances to some of the monk's cells. The gardens are beautifully planted - the head gardener is doing an amazing job, clearly. There are a few more hidden surprised in the garden and indeed in the house - go and see for yourself!
The volunteers are all lovely and incredibly enthusiastic (one older gentleman perhaps a little too enthusiastic, but still wonderful to see the excitement and pride of the Charterhouse). A friendly welcome by a cheerful male volunteer (Paul, I think) at the desk when I visited on a Sunday.
The Charterhouse is only a short walk from the station or the city centre (walking from the latter also allows to to cast an eye at the remaining Whitefriars building en route). And after visiting there, it's well worth popping across the road into London Road Cemetery (Paxton's Arboretum).
It would be great if the Trust that owns the Charterhouse could persuade other institutions holding artefacts from the monastery collected during various archaeological excavations to at least lend them so there can be more to see for returning visitors.
Overall, a must-visit when in Coventry. Allow 3 hours for the house, garden and surroundings.
