点评:Located just a few feet in from the western Crabapple Creek trailhead entrance (near the old M&B site), you’ll spy the “Dempsey Collinson Chief Sgiidagids Memorial Trail” signage. The marker is posted on a large alder tree but, depending upon the time of year, it can be difficult to spot as branches may obstruct it from view. Who was Chief Skidegate and why is there a trail named in his honour?
Dempsey Collinson became Chief Skidegate on 23 March 1973. The event was historically significant because he became the first Haida of the twentieth century to renew the ancient tradition of proclaiming a chieftainship through the potlatch ceremony. As Chief Skidegate, Dempsey played an integral and life-long role in the community: He helped guide the Council of the Haida Nation at their Hereditary Chiefs table; he worked for his community at the Band level as a Councillor and Chief Councillor; and, he helped save the Haida Gwaii Watchmen Program via a generous personal monetary contribution in the 1980s. When Chief Skidegate passed away in 2008, the loss was even acknowledged in the BC Legislature by Premier Gordon Campbell. As such, it is little wonder that Dempsey should have a trail bearing his name. Throughout his life he fought for, and protected, Haida Gwaii.
The Dempsey Collinson Memorial Trail began development in 2018 and finished in 2020. As such, it is one of Haida Gwaii’s newest recreational trails. The route is well-marked and nicely maintained; however, be prepared for a total elevation gain of approximately 200 meters. Depending on your level of ambition, you could treat this route as point-to-point (beginning near the M&B site and ending at Second Avenue), or as a 6-kilometer loop trail that includes a return hike along Crabapple Creek. Regardless of one’s approach, you will encounter a beautiful mix of second growth and old growth forest; Culturally Modified Trees; and clear evidence of early logging practices on Haida Gwaii. It makes for an epic short hike that should take approximately 2 hours to complete.
It should be noted that, after you climb the ridge and begin moving east, the Dempsey Collinson Trail eventually merges with, and turns into, the Gore Brook Trail. You will know when you’ve entered Gore Brook because the trail will eventually be marked with scallop shells (along with the white markers you’ve been following up to this point). From here, it’s a gentle descent down towards Second Avenue.
Along with the unique history lesson one learns while hiking this route, it was also a reminder – for me – not to underestimate any trek! Prior to hiking the Dempsey Trail, I was told it connects up with Gore Brook. Looking on the map, the two trails are quite close together; so, I anticipated a total route length of maybe 1 or 2 kilometers. Thinking the total hike would be under an hour, I brought a single small bottle of water. Let’s just say I was feeling pretty dehydrated by the time we finished the 6-kilometer loop via Gore Brook and Crabapple Creek. Oops!
