点评:Family members from different locations met at Conleys for a meal together. We went there based on the recommendations of one part of the family who had eaten there before and thought the food was reasonably priced, fresh and delicious.
The dining area was pleasantly decorated, homey, and it provided adequate room at a table for all of us.
The staff was friendly and efficient.
Our toddler granddaughter was given a high chair and all her needs were also accommodated throughout the meal as if she was in the staff's family.
The menu was large, varied and reasonably priced. The Irish theme seemed fun, brought back memories of a trip to Ireland where the food was fresh and delicious (in the south part of Ireland only!). The sheer number of delicious -sounding baked items on the menu made me drool. But I did also notice the staff apologized to many customers for being out of things.
Since I can't eat gluten without it upsetting my digestive tract, I was disappointed to discover they didn't cater to people like me. I asked the waiter what was gluten free, and he said, "nothing." I was sort of amazed, because the majority of restaurants nowadays are more aware and caring about modern allergies and other dietary restrictions. Even if they don't run a stark gluten-free kitchen for those with severe allergies, they do often offer accommodations for those of us who are merely "sensitive."
After talking for a bit, the waiter and I decided together that I could probably stomach the corned beef and cabbage. I appreciated his willingness to brainstorm it.
The corned beef I got was 2 somewhat-tough slices that looked like it was meant for sandwiches. The accompanying veggies were pretty bland and tasteless. (The corned beef and cabbage I had enjoyed in the past was more of the meaty chunks variety, with tender juicy meat pieces flaking off. The veggies were much more flavorful, too--I'm not sure why theirs wasn't.) I had no digestive reaction to the food, so probably it was all or mostly gluten free.
For dessert, the only (likely) gluten free option was burnt cream, and they were out of that.
To be fair, the others in my group were happy with their meals. Their breads were especially delightful to them.
I liked their family atmosphere, but felt somewhat excluded from the overall happy experience because of my dietary limitations. People like me end up eating at home more often in order to ensure a meal is safe for everyone.
It occured to me that it wouldn't be that difficult for a restaurant that is so excellent at breads and pies to add something like gluten free cornbread, which is easy to make and you can't tell it's gluten free, so anyone would be able to enjoy it. It fits with the Irish theme. Then people like me wouldn't feel so envious while watching others down their delicious Irish soda bread.
Anyway, I would not return there unless they started offering people like me more and better (digestible) options. It makes me sad, because I love so many Irish foods, and I really miss being able to partake in most baked goods and desserts on special family occasions.
