点评:6/9/23 Wednesday early evening meal
We three middle aged guys from London were recommended this region by a Hungarian friend. We were on our first evening out of two and were looking for somewhere to eat before dusk, cold and possible mosquitoes.
With a combination of TA, GglMps and looking we tried the length of the river which was peppered with various eateries, most closed for the season it seems as there were not many tourist or horsey people around. The ones that were open seemed very expensive in our experience of a week so far (and a few holidays in Hu over the years). We even went into the wooded area past the steam train to find the last restaurants of the strip all closed. On the way, near the 'station' we saw this restaurant, empty but with a door open inside. I photographed it and posted it as an independent pic.
After reaching the end restaurants and returning, bearing in mind the reviews, we returned here to see someone inside preparing the tables. We looked the at menu and it seemed slightly less expensive then the others, the waitress came to us and offered to help, preferring German as a common language she gave us the English menu. The restaurant was completely empty but the evening sun at Was still strong and warm so we agreed to take a chance and eat there as the other options for us were not as appealing. We took a table in the covered terrace in full view of passers-by (the few there were!) and the setting sun. Our presence may attract more diners in, which usually works.
The friendly waitress offered us an English menu each and asked for our drinks choices. The lists were at the back and we realised it was going to be one of our more expensive meals in Hungary. One .5l bottle of dark Czeck beer, .4l Cherry beer and a 2dl Olasrizling were ordered. We all decided in trout as it was the speciality of the town (and strip of restaurants). Three different styles we ordered so we could share and compare. We also ordered different potato styles got the same reason.
The drinks came quickly but went down slowly! In good time at 18:11 the dishes arrived and they were quite spectacular. Fried trout in a thin batter with their fillings/toppings on beds of whatever potato style were all piping hot with a light garnish of salad and a wedge of lemon each.
As we ate, two independent couples arrived to dine near us which helped improve the atmosphere. Our policy worked! No-one likes to go into an empty restaurant!
My trout stuffed with wild mushrooms was crispy, firm and nicely cooked. The steak fries were very nice, fluffy and crispy like very good roast potatoes. There were a lot of them too! The mushrooms were tasty so I was happy! I shared some mushrooms with my friend who loves mushrooms, he liked them too.
My friend said his trout in garlic was very good and very garlicky! He liked his fries too that were thin and crispy although he also liked my fries. He said his Olasrizling was good too.
Our friend had the trout in buttered almonds but he could not taste any butter (they did not look like they were fried in anything). His boiled potatoes in garlic were fine. Overall he said his dish was OK. He liked the Barnard berna (dark) Czeck beer though.
During the meal the waitress came to ask if we were liking the food, yes we were!
We finished by 18:40 and the plates were empty apart from the side plate of bones and heads. The sun had set and it got colder quite quickly. The waitress took the plates away and asked if we wanted anything else. We were very full so no thanks. We asked for the bill which did end up as our most expensive meal yet in a week in Hungary. It was a treat though. We paid by card/phone and left a 2000 tip in cash.
As we left we thanked the other waiter (chef?) too who had been around on the background as the restaurant was not that busy.
We popped to the restaurant's extension at the rear which was right by the river which was nice but it was darker and cooler at that time of day and empty as a result. There was a plastic bottle by the river as litter which really ought to have been removed. The restaurant's toilets were nearby.
Overall we had a nice time albeit stretching our budget.
