点评:A friend recently raved about Aahar stating that it was amongst the best Indian food she’s had in Ottawa. She’s not often wrong about these things but this was a maddeningly spectacular miss that cost $57.00 at lunch.
Let’s begin with this soups: one Dal and one Mushroom. The Dal was fine but very mild and thought this might be a good option for hospital patients as you had to spend time excavating for flavour. This was even more true of the mushroom soup which had, I estimated, one mushroom chopped to brunoise size pieces served in a bath of warm cream. That was it. That’s all there was. Never had a soup like it and don’t want it again.
The beef samosas were nicely seasoned as were the vegetarian (potato and onion only, nothing else) but dripping with disgraceful amounts of old tasting oil. The first bite actually squirted the filth into my mouth and I ended up removing the dough.
Thankfully the butter chicken was a credible version, properly rich with pleasant flavours but I couldn’t shake the feeling that I was eating a sauce that had been commercially made for the industry. And then the tongue blisters set in, something I get when coming into contact with food preservatives like sorbates or nitrates/nitrites.
But the single worst food experience in many a year must surely be the vegetable manchurian. A heavily gelatinous (corn starch) saucy mess of chopped veg with what I suppose were meant to be a vegetarian version of “meatballs”. They appear to have been deep-fried but upon biting into them found a pasty, under cooked and almost raw, centre that had me spitting it out. Was that chick pea flour perhaps? Lupin flour? The bits of sinewy vegetable remnants didn’t help one bit. What an ugly shock. It was truly bad and I know I’ll be telling this story for years to come.
