点评:I was so pleased to see that, after a 2-year hiatus, the original JAPADOG food cart has re-opened at Burrard and Smithe (across from Scotiabank Theatre). Dubbed an “iconic part of Vancouver’s food scene” by the DailyHive, this modest JAPADOG cart is the one that started it all in 2005. Now, some 17 years later, this unique Japanese fusion has become a “must try” experience and an integral part of the Vancouver foodie cultural landscape. Once tagged a mere “fad,” JAPADOG has certainly eclipsed that claim ten times over . . . but what keeps us coming back?
As much as I love the plethora of unique toppings available, I think it’s the taste that has me coming back for more. Whether it’s the Kurobuta pork or the Wagyu beef, the hotdogs available at JAPADOG are high quality and packed with flavour. Really, I’d argue that the “dogs” themselves are the star and the toppings a supporting cast, albeit a supporting cast that keeps things interesting and fresh. Seaweed? Yakisoba? Avocado? You really wouldn’t think any of these could work on a delightful pork sausage but, in a strange and satisfying way, they do. And the end result is always delicious!
In any event, after making my pilgrimage to the original JAPADOG, I decided to order their most popular item: The Kurobuta Terimayo. Featuring a delightful pork sausage, fried onions, Teriyaki sauce, Japanese Mayo and Seaweed, this dog is the essential JAPADOG. The teriyaki adds sweetness while the seaweed gives the hotdog a beautiful (and crunchy) textural element. If you have to pick just one JAPADOG to try, make it this one!
(An aside: Each JAPADOG location had its own “signature dog” pre-pandemic. This was a great gimmick because it encouraged you to visit all units in and around Vancouver. I’m not sure if this is still the case? I’ve patronized a couple JAPADOG’s and haven’t noticed any real “exclusives”)

RECOMMENDATION: It is little wonder the late Anthony Bourdain named JAPADOG as one of his favourite places in the city. With its unique take on fusion, and its eclectic selection of toppings, JAPADOG has created bold flavours that stick with us and keep us coming back for more. Highly recommended!
PS: I’m starting to think the May re-opening of the Burrard JAPADOG cart was a brief “one off.” I’ve since re-visited the site numerous times in June and July and, contrary to their official streetfoodapp schedule, they haven’t been open since the end of May . . . and that’s unfortunate. Oh well! At least there are the JAPADOG stores at Robson, McArthurGlen, and YVR to keep us satisfied!
