点评:Having noted the existence of a SPA, operating at the JW MARRIOTT (Vancouver), and since I live nearby, I decided to drop in on November 9th at around 3 p.m. to explore whether I should seek my RMT Services nearby, or travel across the city, as I do at the moment.
I was greeted by the Receptionist, and interestingly being that there was only a single staff person as the Spa Receptionist, I had to wait-a-while until she completed a Phone Call that she was on. I did not mind the wait but felt that a Guest Services amenity at a JW MARRIOTT should have more than a single Receptionist at the Counter!
Once she became available, I shared with her; reasons for my visit and sentiments aligned to my opening paragraph.
The Receptionist response(s), I would regard as professionally-cool, rather than as I had expected and experienced at other such facilities, to be professionally-warm and welcoming!
I inquired if I could be provided a tour of the facility, to help me in my decision making, toward becoming a Guest at this Spa.
This was important for me, because I am accustomed to the high-level facilities, and warm and welcoming staff interactions with Guests, at the various other Vancouver area Hotel based SPAs.
Interestingly, the Receptionist advised that a tour was not possible because there would be Guests dressed in Robes, in the Changerooms! I explained, though I believe I did not need to, that I was also Male, and Gender privacy as alluded to by the Receptionist should not be an issue.
The Receptionist remained unmoved, and ‘coolly’ denied the availability of a Tour.
DYNAMIC PRICING
I then inquired about RMT pricing and was advised of the Rates, and also advised of JW MARRIOTT Spa “Dynamic Pricing” differential pricing structure!
Not being aware of what she meant by “dynamic pricing” and that this preferential pricing structure was not present at any other Spa, I inquired for clarification.
The sum of it is that the JW MARRIOTT SPA drives Fees upwards, in response to increase in demand for offered Services!
This was a definite de-motivator for me to begin to consider being a Guest at this SPA.
This differential pricing structure represented to me, the notion in my opinion of the JW MARRIOTT SPA capitalizing at Guest(s) expense, when the SPA would be enjoying a ‘busy business day’.
I was confused at the concept of why would an appointment space (when available) on a ‘busy business day’, be driven by the JW MARRIOTT SPA, to be more expensive, than an appointment space on a ‘slow business day’!
Considering that the Guest experience would remain the same, or perhaps even be de-graded, due to the ‘increased-pressure’ exerted on the SPA facility, by increased demand, and potential human-resourcing and infrastructure pressures, affecting positive and consistent Service Delivery.
I rely on consistency from my service delivery providers, and it was apparent to me that I would not be able to rely on same, from the JW MARRIOTT SPA.
The above is further confirmed by details advertised on the JW MARRIOTT SPA website:
“SPA BY JW MARRIOTT (VANCOUVER)- EXPERIENCE PRICING
(39 Smithe Street, Vancouver, British Columbia.)
*Pricing does not reflect 18% service charge and taxes.
*Treatment pricing varies based on peak vs. non-peak times.”
“DYNAMIC PRICING
Pricing for spa services is based on real-time demand. This process adjusts spa
rates in real-time, based on demand, availability, and other changing factors. While
this pricing style may be new to the spa industry, airlines, hotels, and even your
favorite sports teams have been utilizing this pricing strategy for years. With rates
changing daily, dynamic pricing allows you to choose the RIGHT rate for you - at the
RIGHT time on the RIGHT day.”
MANDATORY 18% SERVICE CHARGE
Then, much to my additional surprise and contributing de-motivation to being a Guest, was the advertise on the JW MARRIOTT website that an 18% service charge would be automatically applied to a RMT treatment!
The 18% service charge justified as being for “This includes gratuities distributed to the staff who served you during your visit”.
This means to me that an RMT – Therapuetic treatment for “90 MINUTES starting at $300*”, would be automatically subjected to a $ 54 service charge, regardless of the quality of service provided.
I would definitely object to the JW MARRIOTT SPA entitlement to imposing such an automatic service charge if I were to attend as a Guest and receive the quality of Receptionist service delivery as I have shared here, as well and having experienced varying service delivery quality from various RMTs, that a ‘service charge’ should be an automatic entitlement.
In my considering this specific issue as it relates to the JW MARRIOTT SPA, I have considered the overall service delivery through the entirety of the JW MARRIOTT Facility/Infrastructure and “the staff who served you during your visit”.
The matter of ‘service charge/gratuities’ as I am aware is a much debated, ‘consumer advocate’ issue.
Service Charge/Gratuities ought to be as originally intended, an earned reward, not as it has evolved to, to being an automatic demand, on some occasions, for services not rendered following Best Client Service Delivery principles.
I absolutely understand and accept when an Establishment has practice to impose an automatic service charge/gratuity in situations where an Establishment is called upon to serve a large-Group of Individuals.
In this situation it appears to me that the JW MARRIOTT SPA has as a business practice the matter of mandatory imposition of an 18% service charge/gratuity, on the basis of ‘reverse-focus’.
I also find it interesting that the JW MARRIOTT SPA describes the mandatory imposition of the 18% service charge/gratuity as being “For your convenience ….”
The above is further confirmed by details advertised on the JW MARRIOTT SPA website:
SPA BY JW MARRIOTT (VANCOUVER)- EXPERIENCE PRICING
(39 Smithe Street, Vancouver, British Columbia.)
*Pricing does not reflect 18% service charge and taxes.
*Treatment pricing varies based on peak vs. non-peak times.
SERVICE CHARGE
For your convenience, an 18% service charge will be added to each spa treatment.
This includes gratuities distributed to the staff who served you during your visit
For this experience, I will not subject myself to be a Guest of the JW MARRIOTT SPA, in Vancouver.
JW MARRIOTT SPA
(39 Smithe Street,
JW MARRIOTT SPA
