点评:While the Garden Centre has been in continuous operation since 1991 (originally as Azalea Gardens), the Yaga Café is a new addition, having opened its doors for the first time in May 2022. This review will focus primarily on the café, but mention the Garden Centre in passing since they kind of go hand-in-hand.
“Yaga” is the Nisga’a word for “down a hill,” which is pretty apt given the café’s location in Seal Cove – tucked away at the bottom of a hill. In that regard, the café is away from the hurly burly of downtown, but that doesn’t seem to impact it much. During our brief visit, Yaga Café was busy. There was a small bus full of people there + a handful of “regulars,” all going on a first-name basis. In its first year of operation, Yaga Café is clearly doing something right. Building off the long history of the attached Garden Centre, they’ve endeared themselves to locals and tourists alike.
There is no real seating at Yaga Café, less a couple of tables outside. As such, the emphasis is on takeout and this is highlighted on their menu, which focuses more on light bites: Breakfast, Sandwiches, soups, salads (made from greens in the garden), and snacks like Rushbrook Bars and oats. After reviewing the menu, I ordered the PookyCake Classic (ham & cheese) and fresh-squeezed lemonade. My partner ordered a coffee beverage.
While we waited for our bounty, we decided to scour the Garden Centre. Wow! This place was impressive! Professionally laid out, easy to navigate and locate what you want. The staff were very helpful as well. We ended up buying some cat grass and tasty lemongrass (the latter will go great with some chicken). I’m only disappointed that I was ignorant as to this place’s existence until now!
Back to the food: My lemonade was delicious and oh so refreshing. Perfect on an unusually warm Spring day in Rupert. The sandwich was fine – freshly made with greens picked from the garden – but it didn’t necessarily “wow” me. But I suppose that doesn’t really matter since most come here for the products available at the garden. The café, I think, is just a nice economic expansion.
FOOD: 3.5/5
SERVICE: 5/5
VALUE: 4.5/5
RECOMMENDATION: I wouldn’t go out of my way for the café alone; however, if you’re in the market for some fresh greens, plants and garden accessories, then why not stop by for a light bite while you’re at it?
