点评:Alas, this is what I’d call a hole in the wall. But yet a hidden gem. Felt like someone’s grandma cooked us a homemade Mexican dinner in her kitchen. Although the fare was light and may not fill someone up. Great for a vegetarian.
I had hibiscus flowers on a sope with mole, avocado and Mexican cheese. There were 2 sopes. (Cheese was a few tiny cubes. )
The real thrill was drinking Pulque, chocolate cinnamon for me and pineapple ginger for my husband. Delicious, and we did not feel any particular alcohol effect. We each got a small pitcher blended up. Pulque is made from fermented agave. The most authentic Mexican item we had all week.
We were the only patrons. And were seated at 1 of 3 tables in front room. With a nice hand painted mural done by the artist owner. The rear room was reserved for the staff to hang out at. Granted, it was a family style table for events.
I couldn’t understand it as I found La Mescalero on a snobby blog. (Should have noted the date but who would?) The photos on website looked happening. Very stylish and sleek. Definitely not a hole in the wall located behind Mercado Ignacio Ramirez where we ate. I thought we were at the wrong place. But in reading the “About” section on website, I saw that La Mezcaleria was a sensation almost the day it opened back in 2013. And it was located on Correa down from the Parraquia. So prime real estate. Sadly the owner met with a misfortune or 2 a few years ago and obviously had to scale way back. I admire her pluck to keep it going.
