点评:We travelled from out of town to do some business in Tulum so we searched for restaurants to have lunch while we were there. We were happy to see that El Gourmet was still in business so we made plans to have lunch there. There was only one other couple waiting for their lunch so we sat down and waited to order. The waiter arrived promptly with menus. We waited several minutes before he came to take our order.
The wait for our drinks took quite some time but they finally arrived, an Agua Fresca for me and a “ water “ for my husband. Our food took quite a while to arrive, just two paninis,nothing fancy. We had always ordered the same things a few years ago when we lived in Tulum but thus time the sandwiches were very bland despite having jalapeños and spicy oil on them.
We finished and asked for la cuenta. When the bill arrived my husband was rather shocked at the 520 pesos the meal cost. 2 paninis x 135 pesos each. 1 water at 80 pesos, that’s right 80 pesos for a water. 1 Agua Fresca 50 pesos for a total of 400 pesos but that 400 pesos was not specified on the bill, the actual total on the bill was 520 pesos. We questioned this with the waiter who spoke good English but decided it was better to speak Español, that this was the total and that’s what we had to pay.
A 30% propina or tip was added to the bill. We told the waiter that we did not wish to pay the 30% and wanted to pay a lesser tip as we felt the service did not warrant such a large tip. Service would need to be impeccable to warrant this amount of a tip and that was not the case at El Gourmet. He told us he would call the police. We took a photo of the bill to report to Semarnat however it did not state the name of the restaurant so we are unable to report it.
We paid the amount on the bill and left. We are extremely disappointed with the restaurant, the quality of food, the amount for a “ water “ and the service.
