点评:I had high hopes when I heard there was a heritage centre opening in rural Somerset. I imagined exhibits of Shipham’s rich mining past, stories of lead and Calamine ore, and perhaps even a cup of tea. What I found instead was… a rusty old tin shed, leaning at an angle that suggests it may qualify for “scheduled monument” status purely on grounds of imminent collapse.
Inside, I was treated to a stunning display of 'heritage tools' = junk. There were no interpretive panels, no guided tours, and certainly no café. The only audio guide available was the sound of the wind whistling through the holes in the corrugated roof.
For comparison, the rest of Shipham offers an insight into a fascinating mining past with centuries-old stories and traditions, and even an old Mining law which declared that if a man housed all his tools improperly, his shed should be burned down around him. He would 'be FIRED'. By that measure, this “heritage centre” is historically accurate only in that it fully deserves to be torched and banished from polite society.
Overall, while the authenticity of “dilapidation” was admirable, the absence of any actual heritage was a let-down. Best avoided unless you have a particular interest in oxidisation.
Would not return.
