点评:We visited the Three Cranes after being recomended by someone who has had lunch there.
This was our Christmas meal for friends and we had a fair way to travel .
When we arrived we were shown to a lonely table in the bar . There was just one other table of four. We chose some meals from the festive menu and some from the main menu. My husband and I chose from the main.
I chose the smoked mackerel and my husband chose the soup. His soup was a nice consistency but had no taste. He said it was like walpaper paste! The mackerel was described as being on a toasted beetroot and apple salad with a horseradish dressing. There was hoards of watercress, 2 small slices of beetroot and a few tiny chunks of apple. No dressing to be seen. The mackerel was very dry.
We both had sirloin steak , both medium. These came with loads of watercress, Three blobs of batter which I thought must be battered button mushrooms and a huge mushroom stalk but no actual flat mushroom. We paid extra for the pepper sauces. The steaks were overcooked ( more medium to well done) the blobs of batter turned out to be a piece of red onion which was soggy and inedible. I only knew it was onion because it had a piece of the purple skin inside. The batter was soggy and undercooked. There was no garnish that gave any colour to make it look appetising. Half a grilled tomato would have sufficed. The chips were warm and underwhelming. They were left after 2 or 3. The pepper sauce was the best bit of the meal.
My husband had the Christmas pudding which he said was lovely. When I returned home I looked up the menu to see what we were supposed to have been served. When you are on a party you don't actually remember the details of the meal when it is served.
The service on the night was horrendous. When we arrived we were asked what we would like to drink and from that moment we were not asked again. The only way to get a drink was to ask when a meal was being served or go to the bar and order. When they were served, empties were not removed and we had to collect them up and put them on a nearby table to give us room to move. They were still there when we left - 3 hours later. There was obviously some kind of event ( quiz night and bingo) in the main restaurant and this could be heard over our conversations. Chanting, clapping and jeering. i think this is why we had been seated in the bar. However- the service was directed there and was non existent for us. The best bit of the whole evening was the non alcoholic rose wine. We spent £300 (for 6) and it was one of the worst meals I have had. The ambience was non existent. A tiny cheap Christmas cracker which we didn't even bother with.
