点评:One can perceive Cuba in many different ways and choosing to stay in the old town is the best one, in order to understand Cubans' way of thinking and hard everyday life - for that and more, Casa Vitrales is the perfect choice!
A taxi ride from the airport costs around US$40 if arranged by the guesthouse itself, which is quite a safe idea; I managed a driver through a Cuban acquaintance for half price but was very glad to hand him US$30 each time.
The solar house is located right in the heart of Havana Vieja, a few blocks away from most attractions (Capitolio, museums, fortress, etc.) and also from important streets, like Obispo, O'Reilly and Mercaderos, where restaurants, ATMs, shops for the internet card and others can be found.
Each room is different and specially decorated with intrinsic care and attention, excellent taste is all around. The junior suite is very spacious and perfect for couples or friends travelling together. Water warms up very quickly and some amenities are there but do bring your own, also to give away at the end of the trip: Cubans suffer from shortage of EVERYTHING!
The convivence areas are a cosy living room with two balconies, a small kitchen with supplies and the terrace, where a basic breakfast is offered.
Despite the shortage of supplies, breakfast is enough: fresh juice, fruit slices, coffee/tea (there is no milk in Cuba!), ham and cheese, eggs and bread, all sweetly made and with a smile!
By the way, staff is adorable, all girls are most sweet and attentive, so feel free to give each of them some extra at the end of your stay. I brought them fancy soap bars as a token of gratitude and she seemed happier with that than with the pesos!
Internet is a nuisance in Cuba and will be available for guests in the hotel mostly only by the arrival, so one can quickly let others know the arrival went well. For more, one must buy telephone cards in a shop nearby which allow 1h connection for CUP25 after filling out a page with the given codes. Or one can buy a SIM card for US$ dollars with internet package and more, but that wears out quickly and you must top it up constantly.
Payment is complicated like everything else in Cuba. I was really upset with it before and could only understand why once getting there, so spare the irritation, it's not their fault!
Osmani is adorable and very resourceful. And best of luck to Alejandro, who started yesterday as a manager - he speaks German as well, that helps a lot.
Of course one can stay in a tower hotel in Vedado or in an all-inclusive in Miramar or Playa, people are different and have different expectations from travelling; nevertheless, for a deep visit to Cuba with understanding of the toughness of their everyday life, Casa Vitrales is simply ideal!
