点评:We arranged for a tour of the Ypres / Passchendaele area a few days before the Passchendaele 100 year Commemoration Service at Tynecot. My partner had a Great Uncle, Northamptonshire Regiment, killed at Passchendaele and his body was never found, having initially been buried but the grave was then lost as the battle continued.
She has a photograph, inscribed –
‘ Killed at West Hoek Ridge, North East of Ypres 500 yds from Polygon Wood & 500 yds. from N.E. of Glengorse Wood. He was buried next day by the Durham Light Infantry & a cross erected bearing the following inscription R. I. P. 2 Northamptonshire Reg. Killed in action 16.8.17 “Peace perfect Peace” “He died a Hero’s death”’
We booked a personalised day tour and Jonny was our, excellent, guide. We had lunch at Johan Vandewalle’s café and museum. Johan studied the words above and then suggested a spot where my partner could leave a cross, nearest to where Johan thought he had been killed. We tied it to a tree.
A truly memorable day and very many thanks to Jonny.
