点评:IN BRIEF
I wholeheartedly recommend Undersea Tobago. The highly skilled and exceptionally talented and friendly staff run a well-organised operation which keeps you safe and offers fast access to both Caribbean and Atlantic dive sites to accommodate nearly all weather conditions.
THE DETAILS
While planning a holiday in Tobago, I noticed that the diving was reportedly good so we allowed sufficient time to dive on each of five days. My partner selected our accommodation and chose the Undersea Tobago dive centre. This turned out to be a very good choice,
DIVE TEAM - we were fortunate to be staying at the Starfish Resort and dive centre manager Derek kindly transported us from hotel to dive centre. We immediately took a liking to Derek. He is an entertaining guy with a huge experience in the dive industry and a great passion for the oceans. Later we were to meet the two staff we would dive with each day - Kelly (F) and Ellis (M). Both Kelly and Ellis have worked with Derek for tens of years. This means the entire team is highly experienced and they work well together. Correction, they work perfectly together.
FIRST IMPRESSIONS - arriving at the dive centre, Derek sat us down and gave us a comprehensive briefing. Although I’ve dived on and off for forty years, Derek taught me new techniques which I found to be very practical. The briefing was very thorough and a joy to listen to. Derek mentioned oxygen and the island hyperbaric chamber before I had a chance to ask about these. Both boat and dive centre have oxygen equipment.
DIVE CENTRE - located on the waterfront of the Coco Reef hotel, the centre is big enough to function perfectly but small enough to be friendly. A big plus is that the dive boat, just a few sandy steps into the water from the centre, is within the small sheltered waters of the Coco Reef breakwater. This means that everything for your dive can be comfortably prepared before you set off in the boat.
DIVE BOAT - up to six divers plus skipper and dive leader can be accommodated. Sometimes we were just two divers. The maximum was five divers. The boat copes well should there be any swell and cruises at a very respectable 22 knots (according to my phone GPS), getting you to and from dive sites at speed. There is a sun shade for use during your surface interval. Entry is an easy roll in, and to exit the boat ladder is easy to use even for heavy and less fit people (writing for a friend…).
DIVING
Pre and post dive - the words you will hear most as you prepare for your dive are “relax” and “take your time”. I’ve had many dive trips where I felt rushed. Not at Undersea Tobago. Getting ready for your dive is actually very easy and quick as your hosts take your kit to the boat and set up the gear on your tanks. When the boat stops, after a briefing, you are in the water in moments as everything is ready and your wonderful crew help you at every stage. I have never enjoyed such a relaxed boat experience, for both entry and exit. The crew even change your tanks ready for your second dive of the day. Upon returning to harbour, the crew insisted on moving everything to shore for us, and then washing it and hanging it to dry. I’ve never experienced such generous assistance. Naturally I wanted to do my own ‘dirty work’ as we say, but no, the smiling crew insisted they would take care of everything.
During the dive - while keeping a watchful eye over you, and at the same time operating their dive leader radar that finds every interesting thing on the reef or wreck, these are the first guides I’ve experienced where the leader does not ask qualified divers every few minutes if you are OK and what your air gauge is reading. What a refreshing change. Reef dives were typically a generous fifty minutes duration. Signalling, when required, is clear, and the leader uses either a surface marker buoy or a delayed marker buoy.
Dive sites - sites and terrain are varied in nature. During my ten dives I never felt a hint of repetition. And you get to dive in two seas. As well as the vast range of tropical fish, we enjoyed seeing rays, moray eels in the open, lobsters and sea horses.
Surface interval - whether we were diving reefs or a deeper wreck, the surface interval was as unhurried as the rest of Undersea Tobago. I always felt safe, never running below about nine minutes of no-deco time and never getting anywhere close to running on air. In other countries, short surface intervals have cause me much frustration. Not here.
CONCLUSION - I really feel so fortunate that we found Undersea Tobago. First, a quick hello to Thomas, the youngest of the team. Thomas, you will go far in life :-). Continuing, the entire crew were so very helpful and enthusiastic. We enjoyed ten wonderful dives together. Thanks to the lovely Kelly who led many of our dives and entertained us throughout, always-smiling Ellis who was so hard working and multi-functional, and Derek, the perfect host, for our best ever diving holiday. . It really was diving perfection.
