点评:Junko was our guide for the Battle of Okinawa excursion from Holland America. She wa so attentive of our needs, helping us to get a wheelchair for mom at some of the sites, making sure to keep an eye on us, and describing what we were looking at.
For me, what makes her a cut above the rest is her observations. She talked about how a couple of the sights affected her and how they are a reminder of the folly of war for today. Hearing her profound insight helped me to process the human toll we’d seen at the Himeyuri Monument and the Japanese HQ and how it’s happening all over again with our the global conflict with misinformation in both American journalism and with the Hamas attack on Israel currently going on. She didn’t mean to be political and she didn’t mention any particular conflict, but to see what happened in the past informs our present and she helped me personally to make that connection. That’s good you’re guiding. And that’s what visiting historical sights is supposed to do, right? We look at the past to learn so we don’t make the same mistakes.
Anyway, she did a great job and no one got lost. Six thumbs up out of six from my family.
