点评:We came across this impressive collaborative sculpture, the 15-foot Clocha na hÉireann (Stones of Ireland) while using the car park directly across from the Folk Village, in Glencolmcille, County Donegal. Clocha na hÉireann has stood proudly since the middle of June 2016, erected to commemorate the Easter Rising (Éirí Amach na Cásca) of 1916 in Ireland—the year when British rule ended in Ireland and an Irish Republic was established. Stone was donated from quarries all over Ireland and each stone was cut to a thickness of 3 inches (75 mm).
The map of Ireland consists of 32 stones native to their counties and carved in local stone by 32 different stone masons. Lettering is strictly in the Irish language with inscriptions in the Irish (Gaeilge).
We chanced upon a guided tour with a knowledgeable guide surrounded by excited onlookers on a beautiful summer’s day in July. Those present were very impressed by the monument – opinions varied as to the most impressive contributions but we especially enjoyed the Claddagh Ring of Galway and red marble stone with a gold crown representing Kerry. This is a hidden gem that can be easily combined with a visit to the Folk Village in Glencolmcille Folk Village containing thatched-roof replicas of a rural village that offers a glimpse into daily life as it was during past centuries.
