I went there on the day of the collective weeding. The city hall pays for citizens that apply for it. It was beautiful to see so many brides together. Make sure you taste the Umbu or Graviola caipifruta. Leave your values at the hotel, they say there are a lot of pickpockets. It can get really busy so make sure...
I visited here for the são joao festival in June (I'm not sure why you would visit any other time). The festival was great. Street food and bars and lots of rural music. Safe and well organised, but beware the toilets are what you would expect for a festival!
If you enjoy traditional / regional events this is the place. Food and prices are average.... quality is a different issue... don't expect "the world".
Security is an question mark. Too bad smoking is allowed.
