After finishing my meals at the Sri Aurobindo dining hall, i used to walk to this Romain Rolland library which was close by & do some reading.I read the newspapers & magazines which did not have all the varieties & the latest editions. For getting a book also it was difficult as it was not well organised with helpful staff.
At end of 80's people ware habituated to lend books from library and kept themself occupied in the books till smart phone arrivesin the era - This library holds its name since the french and this also attached with kids library where i use to spend most of my time when i am young...
Came to visit this library on a Thurdsday and there was a security gard at the entrance who told us we could not visit the inside of the Library. As I read other reviews, it seems it only happened to me. Very disappointing.
Very disappointing place where old and rare books are not kept safely, very dusty and not even classified. So many valuable books are being ignored , Otherwise, anyone cna have access to each section and read revues , newspaper leisurely.
We dropped in hoping to get some information of the history of Pondicherry. The service was friendly and there are certainly plenty of books as this is a library and well used too. However for us we didn't get the books we were looking for.
its a government library along with a children wing. One wing has reading room for newspaper where anybody member/nonmember can read various newspaper publication. The other wing is a reading room for books. It appears to be a popular library.
While the collection of books on Pondy and its heritage is good, the library lacks attention and needs a lot of renovation and maintenance. This is possibly one of the last in the to do list if you are at Pondy. The good thing is that it is located closed to the beach and in a very peaceful area.
