I like small local history museums like this - an eclectic mix of local history and curios - it does a good job of explaining some of Winchelsea's history and heritage, with a few interesting diversions. It is not huge but the building itself is also a treat and although the displays offer a lot fo read, they reward time...
Winchelsea is an amazing survival, a medieval town that has kept almost all of its original layout and at least two of its gateways! Do the museum first and then wander round the town. Lots of material in the museum for a wide range of interests.
Visited the pretty village of Winchelsea on Friday in June. Wandered the streets, very nice, followed Wesley connections, snack in New Inn, enjoyed church. Left Museum till last approx 3pm. Was closed.
lovely little museum crammed full of interesting artefacts. well worth a look. my 6 year old really enjoyed being able to be close to the displays.
good shop area too.
the lady on the door was friendly and helpful too. using her own money to sort my change as I only had a big note, and the entrance fee is...
This museum has a very short opening time in the year. I do understand that most are run by volunteers but there was a queue on the day in October that we went, all reading that the museum was closed and open again next year
A great shame
