I had heard of the 1947 explosion but knew very few details. The docents were great as were the film and exhibits to give me the history.
There is also an excellent model train exhibit upstairs manned by the Galveston Model Train club.
All in all an enjoyable and informative afternoon.
Great collection and nice staff. Excellent Civil War and local history. Model train exhibit upstairs is wonderful. USS Westfield exhibit is particularly interesting as it involves a gunboat destroyed in Galveston bay at the Battle of Galveston. January 1, 1863.
I attended the museum with a large group and was pleasantly surprised. I've lived in the Houston area all my life but had never actually visited Texas City or been to this museum. It's definitely worth the hour drive from Houston. The museum docent was a native so she was quite informative. The museum began with the city's earliest history...
This museum gives a very comprehensive overview of the founding and growth of both Texas City and the petrochemical industry. A horrific accident in 1946 is played out in great detail through, newspaper accounts, pictures, and video.
