Our visit began with a bush walk, with our guide Richard in a goatskin skirt and snakeskin headdress. Most of the 40 or so villagers were similarly attired. More a cultural show than a museum. But it is well put-togher and gives a feel for local Damra life. Also conveniently located close to Twyfelfontein.
I visited this Living Museum on a work trip with some of my Damara colleagues, who enjoyed showing their culture to the visitors who came to Namibia. It was very interesting to see the traditional clothing, drinks and jewelry, made by the women who worked there, as well as the dancing and singing.
Well worth a visit. Not entirely authentic, but you get a guided tour and shown many aspects of how local Damara people lived. Firemaking, a pharmacy, a clever game their village head would have played with stones, how they use animal skins, and there is of course singing and dancing. It's quite a spectacular setting too. We were not sure where our guide was taking us but really enjoyed our visit, the entrance is through a huge split boulder , inside there is a fascinating demonstration of what life was like for the indigenous people, the first time I have seen a fire started by rubbing sticks together!
Lots of interesting demonstrations - pharmacy, firemaking, forge, etc wound up at the end by evreyone demonstrating some dances. This is the day job for these Damara people who are brought in daily. Besides, entrance fees support the local community. Definitely entertaining and worth a visit.
We visited the Damara Museum as it was next to the wonderful engravings of Twyfelfontein. Unfortunately, we do not agree with the (exceptionally good) ratings on this page. For people who read information about the Damara culture and who talked to Damara people before, you quickly realize that the image you get from this museum is not that much about... 更多
