A great place to take a hike in the woods and of a view of the Ohio River and West Point, KY at the top at Fort Duffield. It's very peaceful and picturesque. Usually in May of September there are Civil War events/demonstrations here. Otherwise, it's very quiet and the road to the top in closed off. So be prepared... 更多
The fort was constructed in 1861 by union general William Sherman to protect nearby West Point & as a supply base. The fort saw some action during '62 & abandoned by'63. A visitor has to walk up a STEEP quarter mile hill with break at the half way mark. At the break a visitor can turn right toward the fort... 更多
We were fortunate to have discovered this place. A real feel for the Civil War times. We enjoyed a hike which we weren't prepared for. Tennis shoes were fine. We also grabbed a brochure describing the area. A place to go.
While in Louisville my daughters and I made the trip to see the Fort. The drive was not too bad from downtown Louisville, however, you have to watch for the turn as it is easy to miss. There is a good walk, all uphill, to get to the fort, however, my youngest was able to make the walk with just... 更多
Stopped here on a whim and was pleasantly surprised. The fort has lots of historical information posted. It took about 90 minutes to stroll through both the fort and the cemetery. Bring bug spray and pick a cool, not humid day if you can. Also note that you will have to walk about a quarter mile uphill. Nothing too strenuous,... 更多
Ft. Duffield is the first earthen fort that I have seen and I found it very unique and interesting. It is a bit of a climb to get to it, but well worth it for me. I had read some of the history of the fort and the self guided tour was helpful. If you like history, I think you... 更多
Just a quarter mile trail but very steep. The trail through the woods is nicer and easier than the climb up the paved road. There is not much to see. The breastworks stand almost 17' high. There are two old cabins for the chaplain and commander but I think they are recreations, not originals. The fort is entirely overgrown and... 更多
Early spring day - looking for Tioga Falls - and googlemap sent us to the fort. Nice, interesting walk up to top for a good view and a bit of history thrown in.
Fort Duffield has history of our soldiers. For a short 1/2 mile uphill walk you can explore the Fort Duffield. There is a cemetary for the departed soldiers during the War. Also are the quarters that soldiers built when they were not on duty. The average height of a soldier then was 5 oot 5 Inches tall. Please duck when... 更多
