The Batwa Experience is a historical reenactment by the Batwa Pygmy people...

The Batwa Experience is a historical reenactment by the Batwa Pygmy people of what their life used to be like in the forest. Highlights include learning about medicinal herbs, traditional shelters, fire making, honey harvesting, burial rituals, different types of snares, and more.

The Batwa do not just demonstrate their culture for tourists, but also for their own children, so they strive for authenticity. The experience was designed by a professional anthropologist together with Batwa elders who had lived in the forest.

Proceeds from the tour go to Batwa education and healthcare. The tour is governed in part by Batwa.

FRAUD ALERT! Make sure your guide is either Levi or Sylvia. They have photos on their name tags. If you book by email, you will get copies of their photos. Tourist drivers sometimes take tourists to other tours that call themselves "Batwa Experience" in exchange for kickbacks. If in doubt, see Constance or Josum at the Batwa Craft Banda. They usually wear name tags. The banda has adjacent signage with the TripAdvisor logo, and is 30 meters north of the Park Gate on the east side of the road.

HOURS: Call the tour or have your lodge call the tour early in the morning of the tour or the day before. It takes 4 hours notice to organize the longer tour, two hours for the shorter tour. You can also book before you travel, using the phone number, email, or website for this property.

OPTIONS: Visitors have two options: The full experience lasts 3 to 4 hours and involves a hill climb that is done slowly in stages. Visitors may also elect a shorter version which runs for one hour and has fewer features, but does not include climbing a hill. The shorter version goes to the contemporary Buhoma Batwa settlement. Visitors on the long walk can also request a visit to this settlement.

PRICING: Quote is $70 for two to four visitors. Pricing is lower per person for larger groups, and higher for single visitors. Price is $30 for the Batwa Walk.

LOCATION: The booking office is located just north of the Buhoma entrance to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park, the first establishment on the east side of the road going north from the gate. Tours begin 1 km northeast of the park entrance, past Bwindi Community Hospital.

Seems that the reviews are up and down for this experience and much seems to depend on your guide. It also seems that there are a couple of different groups that offer similar tours. We did ours with Batwa Cultural Rock & Cave Settlement Walk. This was suggested and booked by Go2Africa and we were not disappointed. Our guide Anthony... 更多

My husband and I went on the Batwa tour and while we were hesitant overall we think it was worthwhile. If you can move past that this is theatre put on by local Batwa, it is really very educational and helps to support the local Batwa people. In the end, we were thankful that we got to meet people who... 更多

I wish I had gotten the full 3 hour experience other reviewers got. I was alone and and had to argue with my guide to show me the Batwa village. My guide (Sylvan) was NOT Batwa, he was Bachiga and he took me on the long hike through Bachiga lands (for the tea farm, banana beer, medicine man visit, etc)... 更多

The hike up to the Batwa people is exhilarating and the view beautiful and learning about their customs was interesting & fun.

The Batwa people showed us with a very animated tour how they used to live in the Bwindi forest before they were moved into the villages when Bwindi became a protected area. Very interesting, and we learned that this culture may be lost in 20 years time, so we were very happy to experience it.

My guide Mathias was very knowledgeable, friendly and helpful in my "community walk" to visit the Batya, learn about their past and present, and experience other aspects of the community, including the growth and processing of coffee beans, the local production of banana gin, and the processing and use of millet. It was a privilege to see the world through... 更多

We really enjoyed the two hour trek with a Batwa guide in their former territory in the forest. I expected it to be more of a tourist trap, but since our guide (as the accompanying translator explained) actually lived here less than 25 years ago, the walk really gave us some perspective of the Batwa’s history. You will learn about... 更多

I was pretty disappointed in this tour. It felt like we were attending a human zoo. The guide that we had was just awful and he kept trying to push us to buy things along the way. He was not impressed that I was not taking as many pictures as he would have liked and then took my camera and... 更多

our tour guide suggested this and i wasn't that keen but my daughter met a girl from NZ who was also keen, so i went along for the ride and found it very very interesting. i ended up giving all my money to the people we met in tips, the hospital and womans place in donations so take some cash... 更多

I would recommend it. It adds an additional dimension to the gorilla trek, insight into the Batwa past and how they are adapting to their future since they can no longer live in the forest. The people were very genuine and were of all ages.
