Revisit the 1930s in Arthurdale, West Virginia. Established in 1933, by the United States government, Arthurdale is the nation’s first New Deal Homestead Community. Created through President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal legislation, the community provided a new chance at life for residents of West Virginia who were suffering from the Great Depression. First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt served as the empathetic force behind the community, which became known as “Eleanor’s Little Village” because of her interest. Today, Arthurdale is a National Historic District that features 160 of the 165 original homesteads.

The New Deal Homestead Museum is a multi-building museum comprised of a forge filled with original tools, an Esso service station reminiscent of a bygone era, the historic Center Hall, the original federal government administration building, and a fully restored Arthurdale homestead. The museum Craft Shop specializes in Appalachian crafts and quality gifts. The CoOp Store at the old Esso station sells fresh produce, local foods, and gifts.

Arthurdale Heritage was Eleanor Roosevelt's small Washington, DC. It was her point that each family chosen had to be educable and were required to take a test. Each home was required to have running water and a bathroom. If you are in the area stop for a tour.

For so many people, history is a long-ago time. Arthurdale's history is 20th century and worth a second look. My husband and I visited on a whim and really enjoyed the visit.

I really enjoyed my visited. It is a history more people should know about. My tour guide was very nice and she showed me one of the homesteads and a few other buildings. There was actually a wedding in preparation when I was there.

It is worth stopping at AHI if you are at all interested in Roosevelt era history. Mrs. Roosevelt visited many times and the president was there frequently too. It is a museum that clearly represents the proud heritage of people from Arthurdale. The tour guides are knowledgeable and the history of the social experiment is very interesting.

We really enjoyed our Arthurdale tour. Our guide was very knowledgeable and explained the history & buildings very well. We especially enjoyed visiting the home on the tour and learning about Eleanor Roosevelt 's involvement in the community.

This place was great, I'm surprised there are not more reviews. First thing, you need to take the tour, if you don't you will not get much of an experience because it is not the village it was when the community was built as part of the New Deal program. They seems to have low visitation so if you get... 更多

Eleanor Roosevelt put Arthurdale , WVA on the map of historical places helping unemployed coal miners in the thirties to own their own home by legislation in Washington. A must see historical town.

We were directed to Arthurdale by the Morgantown Visitors Center. Located 15 miles SE of Morgantown, Arthurdale is a community established as part of the Roosevelt New Deal. The goal was to provide a mechanism to rescue out of work coal miners and provide them with a more productive life. A pet project of Eleanor Roosevelt, it was the first... 更多

Made the trip up to Arthurdale while visiting in Morgantown, WV. Had seen PBS specials about Eleanor Roosevelt's experiment of a commune type rescue of local out of work miners and my husband had a book about the place. The descendents of the original families have restored the community buildings and one of the houses and there is a museum... 更多
