Princess Street offers a smorgasbord of various shops and restaurants. In the evening, you can just walk and visit each souvenir shops and find a lot of good and cheap items that you can carry with you after your stay. While this street is quite charming, the shops and restaurants are decidedly tourist oriented. It's a nice place to window shop, but there are probably better places to do serious shopping.
Besides having some excellent homestays, this street also has some quaint shops like Peter's and two very useful functional shops (for mineral water etc). There is an art gallery of sorts bang in the middle, run by an eccentric hobo who is worth meeting.
Good shopping on this street for shawls, gifts (elephants!), and some jewelry. Shop owners vary in their pushiness, but for the most part a pleasant experience.
Of all the wonderful shopping experiences India has to offer--this isn't one of them. There's a Fabindia and Anocki in Fort Kochi which are far better choices and much better quality of merchanise.
The centuries old princess street or Loafer's Corner at Fort Kochi is famous for the European style old buildings on both sides.
