The Modern Collection of the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum might well be seen...

The Modern Collection of the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum might well be seen to start where the Founder's Collection ends, and in more ways than one. After Gulbenkian's death in 1955 his Foundation was established, and almost immediately began to support a wide range of activities, notably in the field of visual arts, both in Portugal and abroad, notably in Britain and France, where Gulbenkian had lived, but also in the Middle East, where he had made his fortune. Even before there was any kind of permanent home for these works, the Foundation was acquiring pieces by scholarship holders, from the exhibitions it organised, and from its advisors, notably in London, through the British Council. In 1983 the Foundation opened a new building as a home for various contemporary art activities, and from this date began more systematically to acquire works by modern Portuguese artists. In this way the collection touches the end of the 19th century where the Founder's collection ends. The collection continues to grow, by purchase and by donation, and comprises c. 10.500 pieces, many of which are films and photographs, as well as drawings, which can be shown only rarely. With the new displays of the collection we intend to show more material, within a historical framework, but in rotation. In this way we can introduce modern Portuguese art to those who hardly know it, as well as those who know it well.

If you are in Lisbon, this is a must see museum. All of the artwork was collected by a wealthy Armenian who was kept safe during the war. The museum is easy to handle. Only select pieces from each place and era are on exhibit. It is one floor with special exhibits downstairs. Such amazing things and all donated! SEE... 更多

If you like antiquities don't miss this place! In many museums the antiquities on display have shown their age with damage and missing bits. Not so in the Gulbenkian! Clearly the money was there to buy the best and so almost all the exhibits were pristine or only slightly damaged despite their age. It was also interesting to compare the... 更多

I never would have found this gem if a local hadn't recommended it. I took an uber from my hotel and spent the entire day here. The founder's collection itself is worth the trip, but that paired with the special exhibit (Jose de Almada Negreiros) and the modern collection sets you up for a real treat. Then, the icing on... 更多

The Gulbenkian collection ranges from ancient Persian to modern Lalique and has beautiful pieces that highlight each era. The Turkish velvets and lacquer boxes are especially impressive. Definitely worth a trip to see the collection and quickly wander the grounds. Side note - the cafeteria in the modern art building was shockingly good and affordable for a museum restaurant. A... 更多

We wandered the gardens and took in the eclectic collections of the museum. It is a great way to spend a nice Sunday afternoon. In the gardens are lots of little surprises and turns in the paths, and the museum's collections from Eqyptian antiquities, ancient Persian rugs and pottery, exquisite Chinese art, European paintings and furniture were unbelievable and rivaled... 更多

I went to Lisbon to the Gulbenkian to see the great retrospective dedicated to the work of Almada Negreiros, "uma maneira de ser moderno" ("a way of being modern"). It is a unique exhibition of someone who has enjoyed a long career, with time to try out new styles, new media and new interpretations. Its diverse forms of thinking are... 更多

For me this was the most perfect museum ever. Not with floors and floors of paintings and objects and exhibits. Just a small venue with exquisite pieces to admire. Not to be outdone by its surrounding gardens, a wonderful way to end a visit to the special place.

A superb collection although in a pretty uninspiring building. The bonus is that it is free after 1400 on Sunday afternoons. The exhibits are presented and lit very well and labelled in English. The cafe seemed to be very popular.

We only visited the permanent collection. Greek and Roman gold and silver coins in mint condition, superb lacquerware and inros, stunning silver, and the finale of simply stunning Lalique. I can't stop looking at my photos. Excellent value at 10 euros and half price for seniors. Note: Sao Sebastio best metro station. Difficult to find from Praca de Espanha.

We mistakenly stumbled upon this museum while we were visiting a garden. We didn't know this museum was so busy! It was free on a Sunday aswell! It's easy to spend a few hours here. We especially enjoyed the Asian exhibition. There is so much to see and read. Would visit again!
