First you hike in the volcanic steam vents, then you eat a meal, from several resturants in town, cooked in volcanic ash, then you take a slow stroll through the botanical garden, before relaxing in a huge, beautiful, hot springs pool at its center. Very hard to press onward from this region.
If you go to Furnas this is a must check out. It's pretty cool as is the entire town. I would suggest doing some exploring by just parking and walking around the town center. You will why they call it Furnas.
Great food and hospitality. A must visit when in São Miguel Açores deep in the heart of the island. Miroma is the place to eat the famous "cozido" made in the sulfur oles near the "Lagoa das Furnas". The special taste found only in here.
Some interesting restaurants where you can eat a stew cooked by the heat from the hot springs, Bolos Levedos from Rosa's were delicious, the upside down house is interesting and the scenery is nice. There is a lovely lake, botanical garden and hot springs.
Drove to this and paid our €.5 entry each. There was a large car park with a huge toilet block. The woman who cleaned these was feeding some ten cats when we arrived! The thermal activity is a must see. The unique stew cooked in the ground for six hours is a must have lunch. The hot springs pool may not look inviting it is warm and I like to think therapeutic.
We visited the Azores for our first time and stayed the first 4 nights in Furnas. This was the perfect spot to use as our home base to make various day trips.
