The cathedral dominates the city center, making it impossible to miss. Going inside is free of charge (there is a small charge to climb the tower). We climbed the 219 steps to the top and were well rewarded with 360 degree views of beautiful Schwerin. The church itself was also worth a wander around.
The cathedral is a lovely red brick church and the church tower can be seen from almost anywhere in the city. Renovations underway in various parts of the cathedral, but go anyway.
I went up with my youth group from church and while at the cathedral, we went up the tower. The view was amazing and it was just so wonderful. It's definitely worth the climb!
We wandered into the cathedral after our visit to the castle, not really knowing what to expect. How fascinating then to come across the tombs of the Grand Dukes of Mecklenburg-Schwerin in the dark corners behind the altar. Even though the original cathedral was built in the 12th century (originally wood) the structure now standing was added on from the 14th century through the 18th century. It's a very large imposing cathedral with beautiful stained glass windows and a huge organ. The amazing high ceiling, the huge hall with comfortable chairs make it a good place to rest a little and to enjoy this lovely cultural monument.
